Ways to Volunteer

Volunteers are what make Our Next Generation possible! Our volunteers give selflessly of their most precious resource – their time – to help make a difference in a child’s life.

Homework Club Mentor: Homework Club Mentors are matched one-on-one with an elementary student, and meet weekly to work on homework, literacy enrichment, and educational activities. To ensure that our volunteers are able to form a meaningful relationship with their student, we ask that mentors give a minimum commitment of one hour a week.

Literacy Enrichment Aid:  For volunteers who would like to gain “classroom” experience, our Literacy Enrichment Aids help our staff deliver fun and engaging literacy activities in a small group setting. Volunteers must be available at least two days a week from 3:30 – 6:00pm.

Guest Reader: Studies show that reading out loud and actively engaging young kids in storytelling is one of the best ways to improve young students’ literacy abilities and interest in academics. With our new Story Circle program, volunteers can share their favorite stories with kids and help students discover the joys of reading. We ask our Story Circle guest readers to commit to volunteering one day a month.

High School Connection: We are always looking for volunteer Guest Speakers to present on interesting topics, teach life skills, or provide career readiness training at our teen center. This can be a one-time or ongoing commitment!

Play Buddy: Volunteers lead outdoor games and activities with students as they arrive from school, between 2:30 and 3:30pm.

Additional Opportunities: We also rely on volunteers to chaperone field trips, read to our elementary students, help with special events and projects, and distribute after school snacks and meals.

Internships: Our Next Generation has worked with a variety of high school, college, and post-college graduates who have completed semester or year-long internships focused on an area of their interest, including Outreach, Marketing, Youth Programing, and IT Support. Ideal interns are self-directed, dedicated individuals who can dedicate a minimum of 10hrs a week and have are invested in supporting Our Next Generation’s programs and mission.

**Please note that due to their work with children, federal law mandates that all volunteers must pass a criminal background check.
